Uma procissão arrasta, por vezes, muita gente, que também se vai arrastando, como pode. Muitos mais, no entanto, ficam, com caras de respeito, nas bermas dos caminhos, à janela, nas varandas ou nos quintais mais elevados, assistindo. Já não se espantam quando as mulheres decidem tirar e carregar os sapatos, ao fim de um ou dois quilómetros de alcatrão, pois sabem que não é por causa das bolhas nos pés que elas vão a orar, atrás do andor de São Bento.

A procession sometimes drags many people, who also go by dragging themselves, as they can. Many more, however, stay with respectful faces on the roadside, on the windows, on the porches or in the higher backyards, watching. They’re no longer surprised when the women decide to take out and carry the shoes, after one or two kilometers of tarmac, because they know it’s not because of blisters on their feet that they’re  praying behind the litter of St. Benedict.
