Paulgi disse-me que, tecnicamente, era muito difícil obter esta imagem, tal como ele gostaria. Eu estava lá, vi em que condições ele teve que trabalhar e nem duvidei por um instante disso. Pedro Cachadinha e Valentim fecharam a Alameda de S. João em Ponte de Lima, em dia de Feiras Novas. Ninguém podia passar com o enorme grupo que se juntou à sua volta. A encantadora concertina centenária e ambas as vozes, poderosíssimas, cantando ao desafio com gosto. As gargalhadas gerais, os telemóveis no ar, fotografando ou filmando, e uma sensação de que, subitamente, apenas aquela roda de gente existe e para lá dela não há nada; apenas um vazio negro e sem fundo…

Paulgi told me that, technically, it was very hard to obtain this image, as he would like it. I was there, I saw the working conditions in which he took it and I never doubted for an instant of that. Pedro Cachadinha and Valentim closed the Avenue of S. João in Ponte de Lima, on a day of Feiras Novas, the local festival. Nobody could pass because they’ve gathered a huge group around them. The lovely centennial concertina and both voices, powerfully, singing “ao desafio” (songs to challenge) with taste. The general laughing, the cellphones on the air, filming or taking pictures, and a sensation that, suddenly, just that round group of people exists and that beyond it there’s nothing; just a pitch black emptiness without bottom…
