Algo rápido, sibilante, rompe o céu e rebenta os tímpanos aos de baixo, largando uma cana que cai longe, voando por cima das vinhas e aterrando, a pique, num campo de milho. Um susto; um homem, de cabeça no ar, soltando um palavrão dos antigos e um gritinho de rapariga que se abaixa. Será um momento solene ou um divertimento. Seja o que for, é efémero, e o foguete indica-o. No fim, se a festa fosse lá na aldeia, a minha avó mandar-me-ia «às canas»; proveitosas, ao menos, para orientar os feijões e os tomates quando botassem folha.

Um corpo precisa de comida. Mesmo que se suba à capela em jejum, no fim da promessa é preciso ingerir qualquer coisa. Os frangos, com (ou sem) piri-piri, de pernas e peitos abertos para o lado, decepados, rechaçados e impotentes, jazem na grelha por cima do carvão preto. O cheiro fica-nos nas narinas e na roupa e o fumo entra-nos pelos olhos. É talvez a sua vingança por acharmos que a figura deles é tão estúpida em vida como o é na morte.

Dizem os entendidos que a origem da sede é o aumento da pressão osmótica plasmática. Até pode ser, mas isso no Minho não deverá ser onde reside todo o problema. Depois, dizem que os osmorreceptores estão localizados próximo do terceiro ventrículo, mesmo no interior do cérebro, portanto. Aí já faz mais sentido e um alto-minhoto tenderá a concordar, principalmente porque é com esse órgão que se consegue processar a distinção entre o verde tinto bom e mau. Nós que sabemos muito pouco das ciências que estudam a complexidade do corpo humano, éramos capazes de jurar que a sede é provocada pelo sal do presunto ou pelo abuso de uma ou outra iguaria na tasca de Quim Caxadinha.

As gentes de Balugães deixaram no cimo do monte o Mudo João, como um santo. Ah, se ao menos todas as crianças pudessem falar… E mesmo as que podem, que nos diriam elas se as ouvíssemos com atenção? Talvez nos relembrassem o que é questionar e para que serve. Ou talvez não, talvez nos apaziguassem apenas aqueles grandes medos que acompanham o futuro. Entretanto, algumas não falam. Talvez um dia, quem sabe, algum adulto, questionando, as consiga curar.
